How to use the llms.txt generator

llms.txt is a compact map of the website content you consider most useful to AI tools. This generator creates a readable draft with project context and selected canonical links without presenting the emerging convention as a guaranteed ranking signal.

What the file includes

  • A clear project name and description that explain the purpose of the website.
  • Grouped links to authoritative documentation, products, articles, and other primary resources.
  • An optional section for secondary material that an agent can treat as lower priority.

How to publish it

  1. 1. Review every URL and remove duplicates, temporary pages, tracking parameters, and redirects.
  2. 2. Download the draft and publish it at /llms.txt on the canonical HTTPS domain.
  3. 3. Verify that the URL returns plain text with HTTP 200 and requires no cookies or authentication.
  4. 4. Update the file whenever the site structure or its most authoritative content changes.

Important limitations

llms.txt does not replace sitemap.xml, robots.txt, canonical URLs, or useful HTML pages. Search and AI providers decide whether to consume it. Include only stable canonical pages that a regular visitor can access and that your crawler policy allows.

Frequently asked questions

Should every page be listed?

No. Select the most authoritative and stable URLs. Use llms-full.txt only when a curated full-text export is genuinely useful.

Can the file require a login?

That defeats discovery. Compatible crawlers need a normal public text response without client-side rendering.

Does it guarantee AI citations?

No. It improves context discovery but cannot replace original evidence, authority, accessibility, and good content.
